This is a continuation of a conversation that started here https://devilmaycry.fandom.com/wiki/Thread:20577 as the title says, DMC5 took some missteps that has negatively affected the series/characters.

So basically you agree they indeed ruined Dante and Vergil's rivalry all for the sake of Nero's so-called character development?
No they ruined their rivalry because they wanted to give the fans more Vergil and used the nostalgia of the twins fighting(which is again, to appease fans). I cant say it was all Capcoms fault because 5 was a love letter to the fans. This problem exists with or without Nero

They wouldn't give him style-like mechanics and other weapons because that would make him a complete clone of Dante.
But somehow Vergil was mostly a rehash of Dante in 3 and 4 but fans LOOVE him. 4SE characters were mostly a rehash of Dante's techniques/combos with an expansion on one aspect and tweaked properties.
Dante actually took a page out of Nero's book in 5 with midair directional inputs and back-forward inputs.
Lucia had the same controls as Dante in 2 but she was distinct due to her combos, animations, and tweaked properties. Its not particularly hard to make a character stand out with just some unique animations and tweaked properties. The way Nero used Yamato in cutscenes is completely different than Vergil or Dante
Lets not mention the WORLD of weapons Dante has never had. Spears/shields/hammers/scythes/sickles/whips/tonfa. Wanna make Nero stand out? Just give him weapons no one has used before. Weapons switching wont make him a clone. 3/6 playable characters in the series have had explicit weapon switching mechanics. Every one of those weapons possibly having a unique Exceed property would deepen the hell out of Nero's gameplay.
They shouldnt give Nero the same styles. Swordmaster is mostly pointless since they packed just about all of those moves in Nero's basic melee moveset. Royal Guard just doesnt suit him. Nero has unique enough mechanics that they can expand on them without making him a Dante clone.
- Energy Constructs
- Bringer Claws
- Stando Powuh
- Different ammo types for Blue Rose
- Expand on Table Hopper
If not give him styles then just put the Breakers on the Dpad for pseudo-Style functionality and to open up gameplay possibilities.

If Nero starts pulling Dante's antics in future games where he gets crazy weapons and starts performing some over the top routine before that, he would be Dante 2.0. If you're so adamant about replacing Dante, you don't replace him with another Dante. As if he doesn't feel like that already.
Crazy antics isnt a Dante exclusive. Trish made her series entry by busting down the front door with a motorcycle then threw it at Dante. Lady basically did a gymnastics routine with a rocket launcher on her back while shooting 2 guns and throwing grenades at 4-5 demons.
KalvinEllis wrote:
He surfs rockets, which is a Dante thing.
Most of characters have done things that Dante did first.
KalvinEllis wrote:
Ha uses a Devil Breaker that slows down enemies, a DMC3 Dante mechanic.
This is a borderline videogame cliche. The way Dante and Nero use their time slowing abilities and the properties behind their respective techniques are very different. Lets also not forget that EVERYONE in 4:SE got to use time dilation on more than one occasion.

He yells "Jackpot" while performing moves on the final boss for crying outloud.
So did Vergil...
KalvinEllis wrote:
Why does he need to quote many of Vergil's lines or call his enemies "scum" during taunts.
He quotes like, 3 of Vergil's lines. It was suppose to be hints of his lineage but IMO is was too weak to make a legitimite connection.
KalvinEllis wrote:
Why is he so dependent on these two characters if Capcom supposedly wants him to stand out on his own and take over the franchise?
Again, he's not a horrible character, I like that he's more emotional and expresses more doubts and regrets, but it's beyond transparent what they're doing with him and it's laughable.
He's meant to have similarities to Vergil/Dante. He shows what their life could have been like if they had some kind of family to support them. His cynicism and his emotional vulnerability are enough for him to stand out but i guess thats a matter of opinion.
KalvinEllis wrote:
That may or may not show us how much faith they really have in the character or why they won't give him his own game no matter how much they want to keep forcing him on the audience.
I think they are finally open to give his new game because they actually wrapped up all of Dante's story and loose ends, which they should have done before Nero's introduction. They also couldnt just replace the cast out of nowhere, Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift did that and quickly made it the black sheep.
