Bury the Light cover.jpg

Bury the Light is Vergil's battle theme in Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition.[1]

The music was composed by Casey Edwards, with vocals performed by Victor Borba. It was released as a single on streaming services on September 21, 2020.

Song Description[edit | edit source]

"Bury the Light" has a metal feel to it, talking of Vergil's struggles from childhood to finally reuniting as himself, understanding that his humanity is an important part of himself. Casey noted that the song is "somewhat a reflection of Devil Trigger."[2]

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

Verse 1
Immortal temptation
Takes over my mind
Condemned
Falling weak on my knees
Summon the strength
Of Mayhem

Chorus 1
I am the storm that is approaching
Provoking
Black clouds in isolation
I am reclaimer of my name
Born in flames
I have been blessed
My family crest is a demon of death

Forsakened I am awakened
A phoenix’s ash in dark divine
Descending misery
Destiny chasing time

Verse 2
Inherit the nightmare
Surrounded by fate
Can’t run away
Keep walking the line
Between the light
Led astray

Through vacant halls I won’t surrender
The truth revealed in eyes of ember
We fight through fire and ice forever
Two souls once lost and now they remember

Chorus 2
I am the storm that is approaching
Provoking
Black clouds in isolation
I am reclaimer of my name
Born in flames
I have been blessed
My family crest is a demon of death

Forsakened I am awakened
A phoenix’s ash in dark divine
Descending misery
Destiny chasing time
Disappear into the night
Lost shadows left behind
Obsession’s pulling me
Fading I’ve come to take what’s mine

Bridge
Lurking in the shadows under veil of night
Constellations of blood pirouette
Dancing through the graves of those who stand at my feet
Dreams of the black throne I keep on repeat
A derelict of dark summoned from the ashes
The puppet master congregates all the masses
Pulling strings twisting minds as blades hit
You want this power then come try and take it

Beyond the tree
Fire burns
Secret love
Bloodline yearns
Dark minds embrace
Crimson Joy
Does your dim heart
Heal or Destroy?

Chorus 3
Bury the light deep within
Cast aside there’s no coming home
We’re burning chaos in the wind
Drifting in the ocean all alone[3]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The line "I am the storm that is approaching" references Arkham's line in DMC3, "A storm is approaching."
  • "Crimson joy" refers to William Blake's "The Sick Rose."
  • The final chorus has a similar melody to the second half of the "Devil Trigger" chorus.
  • "Keep walking the line between the light" refers to Vergil walking the line between good or evil. Is Vergil a good person or bad? He is always between the two.
  • "The truth revealed in eyes of ember" refers to Nero's Devil Trigger form. Nero's eyes turn ember, which at that point in the game the truth is revealed (revolving around Nero that he has Sparda blood in him thanks to his father, Vergil)
  • "The puppet master congregates all the masses. Pulling strings twisting minds as blades hit" reference towards DMC1 enemies.
  • "Beyond the tree fire burns" in the Vision of V manga we see a scene from the point of view of a young Vergil. In the scene there is a tree in the family manor home grounds and beyond the tree Vergil and Dante's family manor aflame.
  • "Secret love" in DMC4 special edition during the new additional opening scene we see Vergil walking through the streets of Fortuna. While he walks pass the citizens one of them, a lady in a red dress, turns back and watches Vergil as he continues walking down the street. It is implied that this lady is Nero's mother however Capcom has not confirmed nor denied this.
  • "Bloodline yearns" referring to Nero's existence.
  • "Does your dim heart heal or destroy" another line referring to Vergil walking the line between good and bad, is Vergil here to help or not?
  • "Bury the light deep within" this line is the opposite to Nero's theme Devil Trigger. While Nero has always been trying to hide his demonic side and has to learn to embrace it to become his true self, Vergil wants to bury his humanity deep within him and has to learn to embrace it to become his true self.
  • "Cast aside there's no going home" Vergil knows he has to cast away his past self, that there is no going back to his home.
  • "We're burning chaos in the wind" all the chaos that has happened in Vergil's life became 'fuel' towards his desire for more power.

Vergil has always tried to bury his humanity as it is a great source of personal pain and memory of weakness." 16 September 2020
