Development[]

On November 16, 2018, IGN reported that a new Devil May Cry animated series was in the works by Adi Shankar, the producer of the Netflix Castlevania series, and his team. In an exclusive interview, Shankar announced that he acquired the rights to the Devil May Cry adaptation so that the "jabronis in Hollywood don’t f*** this one up too", and that Devil May Cry will join Castlevania in what they’re now calling "The Bootleg Multiverse."[2]

In late 2021, Shankar revealed that the series was written by Alex Larsen, who worked on Yasuke and the Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix animated series, in addition to all of the first season scripts being done, and that the production would start at the beginning of 2022.[3] It was announced that the first season would include eight episodes, with a "multi-season arc" being planned. Dante, Vergil, and Lady are said to make appearances. From Capcom's side the production is supervised by Hiroyuki Kobayashi, the producer of DMC1 and 4, who performed the same duties on the 2007 Japanese animated series as well as on multiple other projects based on Capcom IPs.[4]

On September 27, 2023, Netflix unveiled the announcement trailer for Devil May Cry at its Drop 01 animation showcase on Wednesday.[5]

On September 19, 2024, Netflix released a new teaser trailer revealing that the series was slated for April 3, 2025[6] and revealed that Johnny Yong Bosch will voice Dante.[7]

On March 11, 2025, Netflix revealed a new trailer[8] showcasing more clips of the series. It was also revealed that Robbie Daymond will voice Vergil.[9] Devil Trigger was also teased in the trailer.

On March 21, 2025, during AnimeJapan 2025, the main Japanese cast was announced: Toshiyuki Morikawa as Dante, Fumiko Orikasa as Mary and Hiroaki Hirata as Vergil, all reprising their roles from past DMC projects.[10] A Japanese trailer was also shown.

On April 03, 2025, the same day the series launched on Netflix, its official soundtrack was made available through streaming services.[11] The soundtrack contains a special theme song by Evanescence titled Afterlife.

On April 10, 2025, it was announced that the show was renewed for a second season.[12]

Trivia[]

  • This Netflix show marks the last media that Kevin Conroy has worked on prior to his death, a tribute for him is placed within the series. Shortly after the press reported about this news, producer Adi Shankar clarified that no Artificial Intelligence was used after his passing.[13]
  • The show is localized in several languages, this is the first instance where a DMC media is officially voiced in these languages: German, French, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese.
  • The events of the series were deliberately placed in an alternate timeline to the original games, as showrunner Adi Shankar admitted he wanted to focus more on "the essence of the characters than the essence of the original games."
  • The official soundtrack was uploaded to streaming services before the series had released.
