True Hell Gate DMC4

The Hell Gates are monolithic stones which serve as portals between the Human World and the Demon World. They are one of the primary methods of transportation between the worlds, alongside the Temen-ni-gru and direct summoning.

Many types of Hell Gates were featured through the games and anime, although Fortuna's Hell Gate is considered to be the only true one, and possibly the biggest.

The true Hell Gate and its three lesser copies feature prominently in Devil May Cry 4. A long time ago the true Hell Gate was sealed by The Dark Knight Sparda, who used Yamato as a key to the seal[1]. Recently the Order of The Sword sought Yamato to open the Hell Gates, which was a vital part of their plan. They have found it, but, although it was in their hands, they couldn't use it as the blade was broken.

To forward their plans, Agnus, the Order's Chief Alchemist, creates three lesser Hell Gates, copies of the real ones[2]. He used the Devil Arms Lucifer, Gilgamesh and Pandora to power the Gates. The three lesser gates, located in the outskirts of the island, allowed Berial, Echidna and her children, as well as Bael, Dagon, and their kin into Fortuna island.

"Lend me your ears... and fangs. Destroy this world so that the true utopia will be born!"

Nero closes the gates as he chases Dante, but doesn't actually destroy them. Later, in the event when Nero used Devil Trigger first time in his life, Yamato was restored and taken by him. However, later Sanctus tricks Nero and captures him, taking Yamato in the process. He gives it to Agnus, who opens the Hell Gates, causing total chaos in the city.

Agnus opens the gates once more

As Dante returns to Fortuna to battle The Savior, he kills the escaped demons and uses the Devil Arms they relinquish to destroy the Gates. After Dante returns to the true Hell Gate, he battles Agnus and retrieves the Yamato, which he uses to destroy the final gate.

Trivia

  • The word La Porte De L'Enfer appears twice in the game, as a mission title and as a video depicting the scene when Agnus re-opens the Hell Gates, it literary means "The Gates of Hell", and it is also the second part of Dante's Inferno by Dante Alighieri.

Notes and references

  2. Devil May Cry 4, Dialogue: Agnus: "I created it merely as a reference in substitution for the real gate. But after utilizing an extremely powerful devil arm... It proved sufficient."
