Limbo City

An overview of the city

Limbo City is the main setting of DmC: Devil May Cry. It is a city under the control of demons with an ignorant human population.

Description

Limbo City is filled with elaborate skyscrapers as well as towns, parks, and streets. In early trailers, Dante is apprehended and taken to the Limbo City Police Department and is later transferred to the mental hospital, where he is kept chained to the wall and given the designation of 64432B. More recent trailers show a Coney Island-type amusement park that Dante apparently lives in or nearby, as well as the Virility factory which Kat is sent to guide Dante through.

Limbo City is controlled by the Demons from a parallel dimension also called Limbo. Here the lies the Demons spread are revealed. An add for "Candie's" hamburgers becomes "GLUTTONY IS GOOD" and "Home Loans for You" becomes "HOMELESS FOR YOU". Instances of demonic control are everywhere but are most pronounced when the city itself tries to kill Dante, which so far has only been seen from within the dimension of Limbo. The city has the power to smash walls together, close alleys, tilt the ground and tear up streets, leaving bottomless pits. It also spawns enemies to kill Dante like white blood cells. It is unclear how these changes within the demon dimension affect the human facade, but it is shown that Dante causes severe damage to the human dimension of Limbo as he exits the demon dimension.

The Demons constantly watch the populace through CCTV cameras which are revealed to be eyes on long stalks in Limbo. These are responsible for pulling Dante into the parallel world and trapping him there. This forces Dante to kill them as he progresses through the city until he can find a way out, possibly requiring the help of a powerful psychic like Kat to locate them.

A recent trailer has revealed a leader of the demons in Limbo City to be a man in formal clothing with three eyes tattooed on his forehead. This and a claim made by the leader of the Order implies that the leader is Template:Mundus DmC.

Background

In Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy, Limbo is the first circle of Hell that Dante and Virgil enter. Limbo is portrayed as being an area where virtuous pagans reside in. Although the virtuous pagans in Limbo are shown to be good-natured individuals compared to the heretics of the sixth circle of Hell, their lack of Christian faith prevented them from entering Paradiso.

The large tower in the background is likely a reference to Mt. Sinai, the mountain where St. Catherine's remains were said to have been taken after she was executed by Maxentius. The tower also seems to reference the infamous Tower of Babel, which was created to reach the heavens, only to be destroyed when Yahweh discovered the plot.

The circus level appears to be modeled after the real life Coney Island in New York City, where it was filled with various amusement parks and had been successful until after World War II. Coney Island's popularity began to decline at that point in time due to neglect.

Limbo City's design also appears to be loosely based on the real life New York City.
