Shot Cancel is a technique that appears in every Devil May Cry game. It allows the player to increase the firing speed of firearms with long reload times by either performing an action, quickly switching to and firing a faster firearm like the Ebony & Ivory, or even performing a different gun technique with the same gun.
Devil May Cry[]
Shot Canceling is most easily performed with the Grenadegun or Nightmare-β, two powerful yet slow guns, by rolling immediately after firing. This increases the firing speed so much that the player can achieve high Style bonuses and fill up Devil Trigger gauge with no use of Devil Star by simply repeatedly firing and Shot Canceling the weapon. The Grenadegun varient is also referred to as Grenade Rolling.
Devil May Cry 3[]
Shot Canceling is performed by firing any weapon other than the Ebony & Ivory, then immediately switching to the pistols, firing a quick shot, then switching back. Though side-rolling also helps with canceling. Another easy method of canceling heavy firearms is by immediately using Block (Royalguard Style ) after the shot. The quick blocking will remove unnecessary extra frames needed to complete the full animation of attack (get pushed by recoil, reload, etc...) and thus you will be able to demolish enemies at much faster pace.
DmC: Devil May Cry[]
Shot Canceling is performed by firing any slow firearm (Revenant or Kablooey), performing an Inverse Rainstorm (Ebony & Ivory's gunspecial), then firing any slow firearm again.
In DmC, a gunshot can't be cancelled into another gunshot, but it can be cancelled into a gunspecial. Because Ebony & Ivory's Inverse Rainstorm is a gunspecial and can also uniquely be cancelled out of quickly, we can use both properties to chain any firearm's gunshot into Inverse Rainstorm, then back out into another gunshot from any firearm.
To perform the Shot Cancel, fire a gunshot, buffer a weapon cycle to Ebony & Ivory, perform Inverse Rainstorm during the original gunshot's cancel window, and while the cancelled-into Inverse Rainstorm begins to lift off the ground, switch to the desired firearm and perform that firearm's normal gunshot. If done correctly, it'll appear as if you've Spiral Cancelled between gunshots, and that the recovery from the first shot looks slightly faster.
Albeit the effect is pretty weak overall (gunspecial cancel only shaves a small window of recovery frames off of Kablooey and Revenant's normal grounded gunshots), this technique's firing speed benefit can be proven it works. A good way to see the effect of Shot Cancelling is to launch an enemy that's very close with any launching move, and perform Shot Cancels with Revenant on the launched enemy vs shooting at it normally with Revenant. At close range above Dante's head, Revenant's gunshots only send airborne enemies straight up, so if the Shot Cancels are done correctly, more Revenant gunshots can be performed on the enemy before the enemy hits the ground vs. only using buffered Revenant gunshots without Shot Cancel.
