Vergil's hair is also white, with long bangs that drape over his face if unkempt, a stark contrast to Dante's black mohawk. Like Dante, however, his eyes are gray-blue. He wears a dark coat with a long tail on the right side, and a collar with a larger left side. There is a blue band on the left bicep of the coat, which also has blue, ornate scrollwork sewn into the left side of the upper back, and a blue lining. Vergil's hands are covered by white gloves, and he wears blue dress slacks, with brown leather shoes. When out in public, he often hides his white hair underneath a black fedora with curled brim sides. He also wears his half of the perfect amulet, a pendant identical to Dante's, albeit blue in coloring.

It is later revealed that Vergil had planned to rule humanity, much in the way that Mundus had done, albeit with better intent. He then proceeds to coldly write off any potential they might have, seeing his role as their protector, even if he has to protect them from themselves. He urges Dante to rule with him, but his brother refuses, leading them to clash in a conflict of interest; Dante wanting humans to decide their own destiny, Vergil seeing humans as too chaotic and untrustworthy to rule themselves. This article is about the new Vergil from DmC. You may be looking for the Vergil from DMC3.

"This is it,Dante. We have to put our lives in each other's hands, completely, without hesitation."
―Vergil to Dante

Vergil (also called the Masked Man) is the leader of "The Order" and twin brother of Dante in the game DmC: Devil May Cry. He appears to lack the ruthlessness of his counterpart Vergil of the original games and like Dante, he is now half angel, as opposed to half human.

Capcom has announced that Vergil will be the main character of Vergil's Downfall, a DLC chapter introducing new characters, a new world, and Vergil as a playable character

Appearance

Being Dante's twin brother, the two look incredibly alike, both sharing the same face, that of Dante's actor Tim Phillipps.

Vergil is also seen on The Order's warning videos wearing a silver mask with a menacing, toothy grin, and eyes with masking tape draped over the sockets. To hide his identity he speaks with a distorted voice to stay unknown to Mundus.

Personality

"With the two of us working together, I believe we can defeat them."
―Vergil recruiting Dante to fight for the Order

Like Dante, Vergil harbors a deep hatred of demons, but Vergil also carries himself better because of his upbringing, and wishes to do more than just kill demons, but to actually break their hold over Limbo City. This iteration of Vergil also has many similarities with his classic counterpart; he is calm and cool at almost all times, and focuses solely on his goal, disregarding most of the people he has to use to get there. Oftentimes it is unclear whether his motives for recruiting Dante were based on brotherly attachment, or he is simply manipulating Dante's familial bonds to rouse him into action for the Order. Though, it is possible that he merely believes fighting against the demons is their top priority as he has been shown to respect Dante. It is later revealed that, while he certainly loves humanity, he has absolutely no faith in them whatsoever. He sees them as a lesser species in need of his protection. He also loves his brother Dante. Though their battle at the end of the game causes him to question his love for his brother, when Dante almost killed him. Had it not been for Kat's intervention, Dante truly would have.

Story

Sparda Family Photo DmC

Dante and Vergil's family

Vergil is the twin brother of Dante, estranged from him since childhood. While Dante was admitted to an orphanage run by demons, Vergil was adopted into a rich family, and was lead to believe that he was involved in a car accident when he was seven, which resulted in total amnesia. His mother was killed by demons and his father has been enslaved by them. He leads an organization, called "The Order," which fights demons. In a recent trailer, he is dressed up as a masked figure talking to a camera, taunting Mundus and his demon minions, mentioning that they have a new weapon they are sending after him. When the figure says this, a video of Dante plays.

It is believed that he acts as The Order's leader and mouthpiece, and Mundus does not know of his identity yet.

Unlike Dante, who was left in a demon-run orphanage and had a rough upbringing on the streets, Vergil was adopted into a rich home to live a life of privilege. Highly intelligent, Vergil wrote a security encryption program and went on to become an independently wealthy multi-millionaire before leaving school.

DmC: Devil May Cry

Like Dante, Vergil has a vendetta against demons, who killed his mother and enslaved his father, and so he pours his vast fortune into ending the demons' reign. In doing so, Vergil created "The Order" to help humanity.[1]Vergil appears in TV Live  with mask at Dante's bedroom and informing everyone in real city that he warned that the they must wake up. Vergil ordered a human lady named Kat to find Dante and guides him for his safety and take him to meet Vergil at Order's base.

Vergil watches Dante

Vergil, along with Dante and Kat has arrived Dante's old home and tells Dante that is his home, but Dante repies back that he don't remeber and Vergil respond that he will remember and order Kat create a gateway with spray. After Dante disappears,Kat asked him if that it's okay and saying that Dante really dosen't care about it."He's a raw, just like you when I first found you.",Vergil said.

Dante proves victorious and comes close to killing Vergil before Kat urges him to stop. Helping Vergil to his feet, the two exchange glares before Vergil leaves with a sorrowful "I loved you, brother." Vergil opens a portal with Yamato and departs.

Powers and abilities

File:Vergil's Devil Trigger DmC.jpg

Vergil's Devil Trigger

As a Nephilim, Vergil supposedly possesses the same abilities as his brother. Just like his classic counterpart, he wields Yamato with deadly efficiency and is capable of performing wide assortment of magic feats and tricks, such as short-ranged teleport, conjuring summoned swords and also being capable of Devil Trigger, which, to contrast Dante's Quicksilver-like state, is based on the Doppelganger Style, allowing him to create a spectral copy of himself to aid him in battle and protect him while recovering health. Vergil also possesses superhuman reflexes, speed, endurance and agility, being able to block most of Dante's attacks and deflect bullets and projectiles with Yamato. Vergil is also very strong and strikes with considerable force, enough to knock Dante several feet away and block most of Dante's more powerful attacks by merely swiping the sheath of his Yamato out.

In battle he is shown to make extensive use of Summoned Swords, using Yamato to fling Judgement Cuts in tandem with his teleportation abilities. During battle he also causes the air to shimmer blue while lightning strikes around the area. As his health gets lower and lower he begins using his more advanced abilities more frequently, including Dimension Slash. Near the end of the battle he will depend on a blue doppleganger that, when struck, yields blue orbs. The only way to defeat Vergil is to make use of the Devil Trigger during the final blow.

Vergil is highly intelligent and skilled in hacking and computers, claiming he learned it during his youth to provide himself "some feeling of control". His hand-eye coordination and weapon handling skills are also formidable, as he was able to snipe Lilith's unborn child and most of Mundus's spec ops in few seconds. He also was able to unerringly hit one of Mundus's watcher demons with thrown knife few instances after spotting the creature.

Background

Vergil is named after and based on the Roman poet of the same name. In The Divine Comedy, Vergil acts as Dante's guide through Hell and Purgatory. Although Vergil was virtuous, his lack of Christian faith prevented him from entering Heaven.

Vergil's role as the Masked Man and his broadcasts are similar to V, the main protagonist of the V for Vendetta comics. V was well known for broadcasting messages to a corrupt British government as warnings for an upcoming rebellion. Also, Vergil's followers are shown wearing oni masks similar to Vergil's, referencing a famous scene in the V for Vendetta comics and film where the suppressed population wears copies of V's trademark Guy Fawkes mask in protest.

In addition to paralleling V for Vendetta Vergil's Order draws is similar to the internet hactivist group "Anonymous" who sent messages of protest to organizations they do not approve of and commit acts of sabotage against them as well.
